They were dealing with their own troubles of Radical Islam overwhelming the entire near and middle east. They were lucky to survive. Pax Christi

The Orthodox Church hasn’t had any such problems because many eastern countries were part of the Ottoman Empire and everyone clung on to it as religion determined their national identity. Also, it’s rather tolerant (this may or may not be true, I’ve never paid attention in church). Now, as to problems, it has always meddled in politics etc., even though until recently everyone thought it was natural, it has tons of money, the Greek Orthodox Church was involved in some scandals recently…

There is Eastern Catholic church too, Maronite! But Eastern Orthodox church stayed like us. You are speaking of the Protestants who became heretic to Catholic church. Although many Catholic churches became more reformed they stayed much to the same traditional ways as the Orthodox church. No radical change for Catholics and Orthodox, we are the apostolic churches of Christ.
