Why are most southern states and country people Protestant?
It seems that most southern states and country people are Protestant. Why is that?
The Northeast tends to have more later European immigrants from Catholic countries like Italy, Ireland, and Poland. The families in the South and West I believe are more likely to be either from earlier waves of immigration (England, Germany) or decendants of black slaves, all of which tend to be members of the protestant religious groups.

Protestants left Europe because of religious persecution.

margauz sort of has it right. Only problem is Western North Carolina (where I live) is predominatly Scotch-Irish immigrants and are very Protestant. Not sure why it is to be honest.
