Why has the Catholic Church been so successful in the Philippines?
Why is the Catholic Church so widespread in the Philippines? How did Roman Catholicism become the predominant religion, with 81% of the population belonging to this faith in the Philippines?
I don't know, especially as the people of the Phillipines have asked for permission to use contraception from the church many, many times and their pleas have fallen on death ears and poverty has spiralled out of control.
You never know, it is still not beyond the realms of possibility that the catholic church in the Phillipines could still go the way of other large entities that haven't conceded to the will of the people.

They moved in and brainwashed them many years ago.
"..The Spaniards had observed the natives’ (phillipine) lifestyle and disagreed with it wholeheartedly. Through their Christian eyes, they saw the influence of the devil and felt the need to liberate the natives from their evil ways.."

A condom will never fill an empty stomach. The Carbon Footprint of those things are so environmentally dangerous to our world.
Catholics serve the poor, do not try to control the personal lives of 3rd world cultures through food, health care, or material goods, like many secular governments and United Nations programs.

I do not know what happen in the Philippines. But when the Hispanics showed up in Mexico. If you were and Indian Native you had to instant convert, if not then decapitation was ordered by the catholic priest. This is a historical fact of how 92% of the population accepted ONE religion.
Edit – The following link shows some of the artwork by Diego Rivera who recorded some of these events in his art. (see image 17 of 37) http://diegorivera.com/murals/index.php

The same way they have in many other nations. They simply incorporate the pagan belief system into Catholicism and vuwah-la, the Roman Catholic Religion, maybe better said Roman Chameleonism.

The down-trodden and poor conditions that which lead to conversions in Phillippine islads. Predominantly, it was Muslim driven island and as per Muslim fundamentalism and faith neither contraception nor any other procedure resulting into massive increase in population of folk-flocks depriving the basic needs. The poor peasant and other fed-up & tired of fundamentalists, spaniards and bent towards christianity, with a hope to upliftment. Accordingly their wish of family planning through churches and christianity was fulfilled upto some extent before improving their living conditions. For instance you take the case of bomb explosions in Bali Islands, wherein a particular community was targetted and worst death toll has taken place.
Phillipines have been subjected to many developmental or welfare measures to improve their life style through churches and were educated accordigly.
The spread of catholiciazation and spread from pillar to post to far ends of large entities/islands in the Phillipine archepilago or sub-continent. It needs a through brain wash and transformation and its influence in every walk of their life in catholiciazation. The ray of hope, result oriented better living standards, welfare, and education were some of successful aspects achieved in majority christian dominated island. Although spaniards tried but in vain; Phillipines have rejected 'em through the fear of devil or evils and other de-merits.

The Filipinos I know here (in America) are well educated people even for living in a poor country and are a very industrious. In fact there are many that work abroad in foreign countries. They are educated the way America used to be educated without the political correctness that has seeped into every fabric of consciousness that governs every day life. There are enough citizens there that are bilingual so that a foreigner like myself is not lost and most needs can be met.
So the bottom line is so what? This religion is another means to unify this country that has a specific identity. The way Protestantism represents America. Religion brings purpose and stands on the premise of cause and effect but not to man's understanding. But to God's.
What is different is there was a generation of people of people in the last century who know how their country was invaded by a foreign power that was not friendly to their nation's survival. Religious faith was a means by which its people survived and gave people hope through that time in hell.
The Church was very fortunate to get a people who were realized the importance of religious faith in God.

the 1st catholic/christian country in the far east is the Philippines. The spaniards came and colonized it somewhere in 1400?? The king of Spain at that time is King Philip, reason the country is called the Philippines. The spaniards built churches, schools and also ruled the country. My great grand parents are spanish and once ruled the town where I came from. The pilipinos are people of spanish, chinese, malay & american origin. Consequently, they are beautiful, smart, hard working and successful people due to diversity of their origin.
Go and see the Philippines… lots of ancient christians churches, landing site of the american forces in Leyte and the people itself, such warm and genuine loving people.
edit 1: Juanny, have you been to the Vatican? The square is loaded with statutes of the apostles and other notable christians. Let alone, have you seen the biblical stories-mosaic inside St Peter Basilica, the sistine chapel… Here's for you to ponder.
Edit 2: Basu dasari: Bali is in Indonesia, pls. You are right, that PI may not be as progressive as other asian countries. I disagree with you as if you are blaming the root cause is catholicism. I would blame the 25 yrs corruption of Marcos, the past president and the darn thing cannot be reverse not even within 20 yrs. So, reasons behind are numerous and complex and runs against your untrue and bias analysis.

Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. (Matthew 29:19-20)
