What is the difference between catholic and christian and the difference between roman catholic and catholic?
well ,i'm a roman catholic but haven't been practicing my faith and is very much confused about the above descriptions.
Many various sects claim the title catholic but only those who are in faithful obedience to the Pope are genuinely `Catholic` or `Roman Catholic` all others are lacking in doctrinal areas.
Catholic simply means Universal but unless you are in union with Rome you are not a full functioning member of Christ`s holy church on earth.
God bless.

Roman Catholicism is a branch of Christianity. All Roman Catholics are Christians, but not all Christians are Catholics.
Catholic (usually with a lowercase "c") can also mean general, universal, or "pertaining to all mankind."

Catholic is a subset of Christian. Roman Catholic is more specific than catholic (lowercase C), which just means "universal." Many consider the Eastern Orthodox to be Catholic as well.

Practice. That's all that differs. We're all Christians and Catholicism is the root of Protestantism. Folks may say otherwise, but there really isn't any reason to argue over which religion is right or wrong. Love your neighbors, that's what JC told us. Religious fanatics who claim a certain religion is "wrong" are exercising arrogance. Who are we to judge what's right and wrong? We all interpret the exact same scriptures. Any one could be right. Every one could be wrong. It's a stupid battle and it shouldn't be fought.

You'll have to be more specific. There are many different strings of Catholicism and Christianity.

1st The difference between Roman Catholic and Catholic in Roman Catholic follow the pope Catholic are a splinter group and do not follow the pope although they say he is head of the church he is not infallible
Christians do not believe the pope in any way.
Catholics are more religious (ceremonies) and believe you need to confess to a priest.
Christians believe in a relationship with Jesus Christ and He is the one you confess you sins to. (No middle man).
However with the Christian faith there are many denominations, I suppose Catholic could also be put into that category. Some of these denominations get caught up in "religion" (playing church) or legalism (taking something common and treating it Holy is the very definition of legalism). Such as…you must read this version of the Bible or you must go by this set of rules, etc. God / Jesus LOVES you…He just wants you to have faith. It's that simple.
I don't worry about the denominations. I'm more concerned with my relationship with Christ. I don't want to "play" church. I want to grow and learn more about Jesus and follow his teachings.
Grace to you and God Bless!
P.S. Some Catholics believe they gave us Christianity…Not true, Christ gave us Christianity. Christians were first in Antioch not Rome.

Hi, Phaz has a good answer. Roman religion was pagan until Constantine fought and won a battle carrying a cross he saw in a vision.(about 300 +AD) He declared himself Christian and also it was now the state religion.(This is not how anyone becomes a Christian.) This meant it was now an advantage to be nominal Christian and wouldn't be thrown to the lions. This has caused Christianity a great trouble because rome didn't drop Paganism it just included christian beliefs. R.C. still contains some of these practices. Worship of Mary as the Virgin Mother of God is like Egyptian deified mother and child under various names. It is nominal Christian religion not Christian family and does not have a good or godly record. Catholic means universal. Bible Christianity is very different. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the father but by me" John 14:6 Eph 2;8-9 is important to Christians, It caused the reformation. "By grace are you saved, it is a gift from God not of works lest and man should boast. At this time the R.C. church was selling indulgence tickets to have sins forgiven. nev r

OK, here's the bare truth…
As mentioned, "catholic" means universal. Several churches consider themselves to be "The Catholic Church". However, **in the Western World**, "Catholic" *normally* refers to the Roman Catholic Church. In fact, the Roman Catholic Church officially calls itself "the Catholic Church". Non-Roman Catholics (such as myself) use the term "Roman Catholic" because it specifies *which* "Catholic Church". So, among your fellow Roman Catholics you are "Catholic", but among the rest of the world you are "Roman Catholic". However – as I noted at the beginning – everyone in the West usually recognizes "Catholic" to mean "Roman Catholic".
"Christian" literally means a follower of Christ. From the perspective of the English language, "Christian" includes Roman Catholics, Baptists, Jehovah's Witnesses, etc. etc. Everyone that believes in Jesus is a Christian. This is also the *Scriptural* definition of a Christian.
However – oddly, to me – there are some Protestants who have the idea that Christian has a different meaning in English, and that meaning does not include Roman Catholics. I believe that this misuse of the word Christian lies strictly among my fellow "bible-believing" Christians. In other words, I think that only strict bible-based Protestants misuse the word "Christian" in this manner. The reasoning, supposedly, is that Roman Catholics do not follow the bible, and so are not Christian. These people seem to be unaware that for about the first 300 years of Christianity there was no bible – but there were scads of Christians.
SO, that's why there is confusion – both "Catholic" and "Christian" are used ambiguously.
SUMMARY
Catholic
a) Almost always means Roman Catholic
b) Sometimes, refers to other Christian sects
b1) some with the name "Catholic" (like the Old Catholic Church)
b2) some use the term in their beliefs (e.g. Eastern Orthodox churches). In this case, "catholic" means nothing except "universal".
Christian
a) By English and Scriptural definition – any follower of Christ, or any sect that follows the teachings of Christ
b) Among a few Protestants – those who follow only the bible's teachings about Christianity and no other teachings

Christianity is the religion which follows the teachings of Jesus Christ. Christianity can be divided into many denominations which have different beliefs about following Jesus Christ. The Catholic Church makes up one of these denominations. All Catholics recognizes the supremacy of the Pope and are in full communion with him. They share the same body of Christian teaching.
While all Catholics are united in faith, there are 23 "particular churches" that Catholics belong to. These each have their own Church laws and their own liturgical traditions. The Western or Latin Rite is one of these churches. Many sources, Catholic and non-Catholic alike, refer to the Latin Rite church as the Roman Catholic Church. The other rites are referred to by a different term such as the Chaldean Catholic Church. However, the term Roman Catholic could be used to describe any of the Catholic Churches, not just the Latin Rite Church. Also note that the term Roman Catholic is mainly only an English phrase. In most languages, Catholic is the only term used.
