How much is the Catholic Church allowed to charge for holy water?
Please, Please, no sarcastic or uninformative answers. I believe a acquaintance of mine has been scammed by a person posing as a church official. I know nothing of the Catholic faith or rites, and I don't know if churches even sell holy water.
from strickley a legal point of view they can charge what they want
However selling of holy items is one step away from the corruption that got them in trouble back in the 1500's

you are NOT allowed to charge for ANY blessed item in the Catholic Church. She was scammed. WHile they might say to offer a donation for an object you do NOT have to give a penny!

There is no rule that regulates such a transaction. If you choose to buy 'holy' water, they can charge you whatever they like.

Hey that is my idea, I wanted to get one of those online priest degrees and bottle holy water and sell it, you can use it on cuts, or splash it at your kids when they curse which is better then stoning, maybe even cook with it. lol

While the answer above may be correct in that Church *policy* prohibits the sale of blessed items, I'd point out that there is no "legal" reason that the Church cannot charge as much as they want for anything at all. There is no *legal* price control on religious items.
Now, what *would* be illegal would be if the individual in question was selling something that was not his, and that he had no legal title to.
So if there is holy water in the church and church policy is that it not be sold, then any church official who took some and sold it without permission would be selling stolen property.

Churches charge nothing for holy water. However, they might charge for the bottle the holy water comes in. You can bring your own bottle, though.

She was scammed! whether the church charges or not.
All blessings come from God which was already paid for by the blood of Jesus at the cross.
If my son died to bring you liberty and you sent me a penny to buy your freedom, I would see it as a grave insult.
Why then do we do this to God?
Most catholic priest do not charge. However, some might. But what difference does it make if the officiant was a real priest or not? Infact, it is worse if it was a priest who scammed her. Remember, the real scam is to sell or buy something that has already been purchased at calvary.

There is no price or charge for holy water. You just go to the church and get some. Sounds like your friend was indeed scammed.
God bless.
