Do Catholic leaders still prefer to not let their flock read their bibles for themselves?
For over a thousand years, the Catholic leaders wouldn’t even let their flock touch a bible let alone read it for themselves. However, in today’s world, where Catholics are allowed to own their own bible and it’s even translated into their own language, do Catholic leaders still prefer to do the interpreting of biblical instructions for their flock rather than to let them do it for themselves?
Catholics can/do read the Bible…. and I don’t see anything too wrong with Church leaders sharing their interpretations.
Susanna….you seem VERY bitter. Let go.

The Catholic Church prefers to avoid what happened to Protestantism, where everyone was encouraged to come up with their own version of "truth". Truth is truth, and the RC Church has the authority to define what the Bible really means and teaches, guided by the Holy Spirit as Jesus provided.

does a bear chit in da woods??? it’s how they maintain their control, can you imagine the outrage and chaos if their followers actually sought the Truth for themselves as God Commands us ALL to do, not some ALL, yet they obey / please "man" over God…..oy, meh…even if they did "sneak" and read it they have not the skill nor wisdom to actually interpret the meaning,,it would appear foreign to them from all the lies they’ve been taught and one of those lies is that they are ABOVE the Bible, ya see??? the church covered themselves well indeed, … God Bless

Yes, that is still the thrust of the Catholic. Keep their people in blindness so they accept the churches word on false teachings like the trinity, hell fire, use of the cross, immortality of the soul, and many other false teachings.

Presumably to stop them spotting the flaws.
Speaking of flaws I intend on reading through the entire bible and compiling a list of all the contradictions and problems in it. Should be interesting.
Then maybe I’ll post it up here.

They do allow catholics to read the bible, but they will not allow them to read any interpretation other than the one from the pope. The may allow them to read but will not allow them to think.
This shows the catholic church is a cult and does not follow what Jesus says in His Scriptures.

W have Bible studies just like non-Catholics. And… we even can get indulgences for reading the Bible.
Your historical facts are incorrect, BTW.

Last time i checked Catholics could read the Bible themselves. This is 2009, not 1449. Catholic leaders provide spiritual guidance.

<<Do Catholic leaders still prefer to not let their flock read their bibles for themselves? For over a thousand years, the Catholic leaders wouldn’t even let their flock touch a bible let alone read it for themselves.>>
Most people, at the time, were illiterate. Only a few could read.
The problem was with lay Catholics not only reading but also attempting to Interpret the Bible.
No. Only those with the Teaching Authority of the Church can Interpret the Bible.
<<However, in today’s world, where Catholics are allowed to own their own bible and it’s even translated into their own language, do Catholic leaders still prefer to do the interpreting of biblical instructions for their flock rather than to let them do it for themselves?>>
ONLY Catholic Clergy can Interpret the Bible as ONLY Catholic Clergymen have the teaching authority of the Church.
ANYONE can read the Bible on their own – but Interpretation ONLY comes from those with Teaching Authority of the Church.

Try and look at it this way.
Imagine that you never learned math, and you open a math book. You would be able to read the words, you might even understand most of them but you would not grasp the meaning.
Wouldn’t you appreciate it if someone who knew math came and explained it to you?
Same way with scripture, while i enjoy reading it by myself, it is very helpful and often essential that someone else who has studied it more and has learned from centuries of other people who have studied scripture come and explain it to me.
I believe that it is gift given to very few people to be able to open scripture and understand it properly without instruction.

We encourage people to read the bible. Back then, no one but clergy could because it was written in Latin.
We still listen to the priest’s interpritations of the bible, but we may also study it.

Some of these answers show how little most of you know about the Catholic faith.
No, people are greatly encouraged to study the bible. There are only 8, EIGHT!!!, passages the (one, true) church claims to translate infallibly. But look at protestants – they all want to interpret the bible individually without any authority. Tell me how the same passage can have 30,000 different meanings?! The Church doesn’t tell the people what to believe, they help the people learn what God and Jesus truly taught.
