What is the most accurate version of the bible?

I am looking at a NLT (Chicken Soup for the Soul bible. A gift from my mom) and a KJV that I bought today.

Is there a version of the bible that is very accurate? I know there will never be a 100% accurate bible, but is there one that is close?

It is important to know that the King James Version is an (Old) English Translation of the Latin Vulgate, which was a translation from the original Greek.

Any versions that use the original Greek as their source are going to be less prone to error than a translation of a translation. There are many examples of King James translations where the translators just got it wrong. Now, I happen to like the NIV – it was a collaborative effort of many scholars using the original (and/or oldest) Greek Manuscripts available and when these old manuscripts differ, the NIV tells you so. The only challenge with the NIV is that it adds a LOT of words. The intent is to make it easier to read, but the translators did take some license that, in some cases, it could be argued they shouldn’t have.

If you want accurate, the Revised Standard Version (RSV) is good, it is just harder to read than the NIV and there aren’t many differences otherwise.

I hope this helps!

When reading the Bible, How do I know when something is symbolic and when it is literal?

I noticed that interpretation is what seperates most Christian religions. So I want to know how people make the distinction.

If it doesn’t make sense do I just say it’s symbolic? Isn’t that just like altering the bible to make it more believable? Please help me understand.

Here’s an excellent essay on how to interpret the bible …

What are some Bible verses about empowering others?

Hi, I was just wondering what are some Bible verses about empowering others? As in encouragement, support, etc. Thanks.

You could look up all the things that the bible says we are (more than conquerors, the righteousness of God in Christ, loved, bought with a price far above all, healed and whole etc) And start confessing them with the phrase attached "the bible says I am therefore I am [healed]" etc.
Get your list and give your friends the appropriate verse when they need it.

How can you understand the Bible without a human to teach you?

In talking to many people over the years, people keep telling me that all you need is the Bible and to ask the holy spirit to help you understand the Bible. Nothing else.

Couple of problematic questions with this line of reasoning:

If you were to rely on your own understanding, would you not have many different sects teaching tons of different understandings of the Bible?

If everybody had the holy spirit guiding them, would they not all have come to the same conclusions regarding what the Bible actually teaches?

Everybody who is searching for truth of the Bible are all sincere in their search. Why do they not all believe the same thing if they all asked the holy spirit to guide them?

So, can you understand the Bible without a human to teach you?

If you treat others as you want to be treated why does anyone need a bible?
It’s called the golden rule I learned that in grade school, it’s the most important thing I have ever learned.
The golden rule never molested deaf kids, or covered up the molestation of deaf kids.

How did you decide your bible is the absolute authority on truth?

I often hear people say my bible is the word, the truth.

To decide something is truth we usually examine all the evidence. In a court case you don’t just take the word of a defendant or prosecution without examining all evidence in the case.

Can you really claim that the bible is absolute authority truth word when most likely you have not examined other religious beliefs, books, texts, historical facts etc, there are 100s of religions over 100s of years while ever there have been humans around. Christianity itself is split up into denominations who interpret the bible in different versions.

Why are you not willingly to question? How did you choose your religion and make a decision?

Isn’t it true that most likely you are following your family and peers?

Thoughts please…..

oK PEARL Lets see you Move a Mountain with your FAITH then… Faith is Stupid. It means to believe with no evidence. Duhhhhh

How do you decide your particular bible is the absolute authority word?

Does this mean you took the time to investigate other religions, bibles, theories, science, history and then made an informed decision, you looked at everything in depth and then decided your bible is the one?

The absolute authority outside the many things that Jesus taught and did that were not written down are no longer available to us. We do not have the manuscripts written down by the writers. We have copies of copies of copies from the days before photo machines. A few Aramaic, probably the language written in. A lot of Greek, many of which are translations from other languages. I even heard that there are some in Armenian.

As with deciding about global warming, I read the popular literature, I mistrust the newspapers, and I read some formal presentations by scientists to Congress. I do not read original science published in journals because that doesn’t help me. I compare the scientific politics of global warming to plate tectonics. I rely on my judgment honed by an undergraduate education with alot of physics and chemistry and a great high school biology class.

So, I have parallel bibles. I have read the translation philosophies. I have read book reviews by knowledgeable people. I know what liberal protestants recommend. I know what is used in seminaries and colleges. I know of the fondness people have for the KJV. I have studied the history of Catholic Bibles in English.

Completely examined? no. Thoughtfully informed?I think I am.

Once you are past the Christianity of a child, in order to have an adult faith, or to make an informed rejection of Christianity, a sound knowledge of the Bible is required. There is alot of material out there, but with a good guide you won’t read so many duplicate articles and can stick to the well thought out ones and skip the dross.

Oh, one other safeguard, I don’t pick one. Three that are similar. NRSV, NAB, New Jerusalem Bible. I also have the Gospels and Psalms translated to a gender neutral English. And I have the Five Books of Moses translated by Robert Alter.

Verses in the Bible that refer to homosexuality?

I’m looking for verses and passes in the Bible that talk of homosexuality. I’m not knocking anything, or anyone, I’m just doing a research paper on gay rights and was planning to use the Bible as a refrecne. Anything would be greatly appreciated!

Hey there,

Lana makes some interesting points but I disagree – there’s a LOT more research on why some people are gay and lesbian. There’s no evidence that homosexuality is a learned behaviour or a psychological disorder, and plenty that suggests it’s biological. For example, there are some fun facts like gay men are much more likely to be left handed than straight men. How do social theories account for that? Did we learn that at gay school?! Come on! :-)

As for the sexual orientation of scientists – is that less biased than attempts by one Christian scientist recently to "prove" that you can change someones sexual orientation? (his research was seriously flawed – the equivalent of travelling to Scotland, interviewing only people who both worked in the Scottish tourist industry and who claimed to have had seen the Loch Ness Monster, and claiming that this was proof she exists!) It also doesn;t account for the many studies published by straight scientists which support the view that sexual orientation is biological.

BUT – say we were able to locate the "gay gene" (not that it’ll be one gene, it’ll be polygenic), what would that prove? It would mean only that gay men and lesbians are born that way, much like some people are born blind or deaf.

Sexual orientation has no moral gradient – sexual behaviour on the other hand does. Which by the way is all the Bible mentions. The concept of sexual orientation is only ~150 years old. Given that the Bible was completed in 98AD, it must be talking about homosexual behaviour, NOT homosexual orientation. (simple logic!)

The Bible doesn’t say that loving same-sex relationships are wrong. What it’s talking about are abusive homosexual relationships (look at the quote from Romans 1 – it is very clear, lust – not love!). I’ve attached a link which might help with that some more.

Hope you get on well with your paper!

:-)

How is it that the ancient Bible describes the circulation of the atmosphere?

How is it that the ancient Bible includes some principles of fluid dynamics?

How is it that the ancient Bible includes reasonably complete descriptions of the hydrologic cycle?

It also talks about during Noah’s time in Genesis 7:11 "…were all the fountains of the great deep broken up….," alluding to the water and hydrothermal vents beneath the ocean floor. These were only discovered in the last few decades.

How do you feel about the Bible being an accurate resource?

We know that the Bible is full of contradictions and also impossibilities (Noah’s ark, etc.). So what is your conviction about this>

(a) We need to study and consider everything that is written there in order to make a decision about the validity of same.

(b) I believe that everything that is written in the Bible is the absolute and unfailing word of God and that we should live our lives accordingly.

(c) I believe that living my life strictly according to what is printed in the Bible is bound to result in absolute and total frustration.

(c) is most valid of the choices available, since I have seen many examples of it close at hand. I have already done (a) when I was a boy and know the Bible is invalid. My oldest sister claims to go along with (b), but she ignores parts of it whenever it cramps her style.
