You can get the full Bible both old and new testament. Tell him to read it regularly. This will help him to reach his goals. You can even guide him to look into online sources like http://how-to-study-the-bible.net/ . Internet also has many good things.
References :
This should be a start
http://www.BibleSelector.com

The problem with your question is that "male high school student" doesn't give us nearly enough information to recommend any particular bible. What is his denomination, if any? Is he a "good reader" - or are comic books his idea of "literature of the highest caliber"? Do you want to get him a study bible that explains the bible itself, or one that advises him on how he should live a Christian life? All of this info can be important in choosing a bible.

The King James, of course - it's got all the beautiful lines. You might not be able to understand them, but they're SO COOL!
References :
The New World Translation of the Greek and Hebrew scriptures is the best version out there. Even by non- Jehovah's Witnesses it is considered to be the Most accurate translation available. It is also written in modern english, not confusing like the King James Version. It is easier to read, without being 'dumbed down' like the Reader's Digest version has been.
It is also available, free of charge , at any Kingdom Hall you visit. Or you could call one and ask that one be brought to you. If you want, you could contact me via my email and I'll even send you one, if you would like.
References :
The recipient’s gender is irrelevant.

It depends whether it is simple a gift or to be used for Bible study.

If a gift then any version will do. The NIV would make the easiest reading.

If for Bible study may be a Thompsons Chain Reference version would be the most use full.
References :
My choices

Only God can reveal the meaning of his word, the bible. So if we want to know the truth we must ask God to show us meanings and give us understanding or we just guess. Before we start reading the bible ask God for knowledge and understanding, then we can know and understand it as God gives it to us.
If I wanted to know something written is spanish, I would go to someone that speaks spanish and ask them what it means so that I may understand what it says. Or I could look at it, not understanding, then say it means this or that: not knowing spanish, I could try to make it mean whatever i wanted, though this would not be the right interpretation. Many do this with the bible, it is God's word and only God can tell us the meaning of things and give us understanding too. Or we just guess or make something up. So go to God and ask him directly for the truth of his word. And God can do this through any bible, not just some but all.
hope this helps and take care.

If you can stand to spend about $60, get a Parallel Bible with four translations on each page, one that has King James, Jerusalem Bible, Revised Standard, and another translation. this gives four different versions of the translations, and is excellent for studying.

Sorry for the other idiotic answers. A Parallel Bible is really a very good way to study. But it is not cheap.
References :
KJV. It is the most powerful and honest Christian bible that exists. The Catholic Bible has extra books. The NWT is mistranslated. And, the Book of Mormon is a fraud.
