How can the Bible say to kill people, and then say Thou shall not kill?
In leviticus, the third book of the bible, which was written by moses, AFTER God gave him the ten commandments, it explicitly says than gay men should be put to death as well as anyone who sleeps with a woman and her mother, as well as for several other reasons. I am NOT an atheist, just a confused kid that would like a knowledgeable christian to help me understand. Thanx!
If you are a Christian, then you've found one more reason not to follow christianity.

Why so defensive over being possibly labeled an atheist?
I personally consider it a complement.

People are stupid.

The early Hebrews were under the Law of God – the Hebrew nation was a sort of theocracy. When God commanded that someone should be put to death, then they had no choice but to obey God's Law.
it's sort of like how can the US government execute someone under civil law. It's not murder but rather a state-ordered execution for protection of society.

The Law of God says not to murder…it is not the same thing as putting a person to death for violation of the Law.
According to Wikipedia, "Murder, as defined in common law countries, is the unlawful killing of another human being with intent (or malice aforethought), and generally this state of mind distinguishes murder from other forms of unlawful homicide. All jurisdictions, ancient and modern, consider it a most serious crime and therefore impose severe penalty on its commission."

The entire Bible is nothing but contradictions. God doesn't believe that his own laws apply to him as well, thus he frequently demands bloodshed in the OT. Yet as soon as the NT begins, he's all of a sudden a loving forgiving God with rainbows and butterflies everywhere you turn as though the God of the OT is not the same being at all. Someone is bipolar to the extreme and doesn't feel that he has to adhere to any laws that he gives others but woe to them who don't obey him.

A big problem here is to understand the difference between killing and murder. The commandment (In the NIV) says Do not murder. Murder is defined as killing with malice aforethought. See the bloodshed laws in Numbers 35:16-33 and other places. Note that God calls murder shedding INNOCENT blood.
Now, look at the places in the Bible where God tells you to kill like the passages you mentioned. In a God fearing community, there are sins that deserve death. All sin must be atoned for and some sins can only be atoned for through death like in murdering, where the murderer must die to atone for the blood shed. If it is not atoned for the blood that is shed comes upon the people of the land. Just imagine the innocent blood that is shed in America through abortions 1.2 million per year.
Back to what I was saying. We do not live in a God fearing community, despite our Christian claims. You will find that out when you keep reading your Bible. God gave the written law to the Israelites. They were to be a holy nation and all of them entered into a covenant with God Exodus 24 :3 If the U.S. was a holy nation we would also have to implement the laws here. However, we do not have the authority to do so. The nation will not let us implement our own laws the way the Romans let the Jews. And God wants us to submit to authorities. Romans 13 1-8
In conclusion, yes we need to be obeying the laws God gave us. However, we cannot enforce them. If you have further questions e-mail me as I have barely touched the subject.

The Wages of Sin is Death. Moses was dealing with God's chosen people that God brought out of Egypt after 400 years of bondage/slavery to Pharaoh. God wanted Israel to obey all His commandments and do His will. The Israelites disobeyed God and rebelled against Him and served other gods and goddesses in the land that God gave to them. God opened the earth and swallowed up 200 of Korah's men that disobeyed Moses, God's anointed man.
All through the Old Testament God is showing to man that man cannot keep the Ten Commandments and that man needs a Savior.
Have you read about killing the rebellious child? Israel was told to kill their rebellious children. What God is saying is do not raise a rebellious child, because if you can't kill him, God will kill not only his body but his soul in hell. God is trying to get across to His people that if you raise a child that rebels against God, it is the same as killing that child.
God specifically tells gay men that man shall not lay with man as man lays with woman, it is an abomination to God. God specifically tells men do not fornicate and do not commit adultery. Fornicate is having sex before marriage. Adultery is having sex with someone besides your spouse.
Hebrew and English are difficult to get an exact translation and sometimes kill is murder. Thou shalt not murder. God says "if man sheds blood by man shall his blood be shed, because in the image of God made he man." God doesn't take lightly murdering another human being. This very verse is where man gets "Capital Punishment." This is also a very good verse to explain why abortion is wrong. Aborting a child is bloody and God says there is life in the blood. Life begins at conception because the dad gives one allele of blood type to the child and the mother gives one. The only connection to the child until it is born is through the sperm of the dad. So life is in the blood and life comes through the sperm that has the allele for the blood type. So life begins at conception, because without the dad's sperm and allele blood type no child has ever been born except Jesus the Christ. Only Christ was virgin born.
The Bible is the most wonderful book ever written. It is the inspired word of the living God. The Bible is the most contested book throughout all history, but it has stood the test of time and it has never, never been wrong.
Keep reading the Word of God and the Lord will make it come alive for you. It is the Holy Spirit that will teach you all things concerning Christ and He teaches you through the Word of God, the Holy Bible.
I love the King James Bible. I love the way it reads and to me it is the easiest to read.
Thanks for asking. May the Lord bless you and keep you.

Because it is talking about murdering in the commandments. That is why even today, Lutherans translate it as "you shall not murder." If you want to study in depth, you should learn some ancient Hebrew
