Where in Bible does it justify use of war to gain various kinds of freedom? What types of freedom are merit war?

In the USA students are traditionally taught that the Revolutionary War was justified because of the fight for "freedom." Which/what freedoms were endangered such that the violence of war and the defiance of the laws of the land were Biblically justified?

Is economic freedom(s) sufficient justification? Where does the Bible draw the line? Did the Bible justify loyalty to England or loyalty to the Rebellion?

You are correct – opposition to authority is *prohibited* to Christians. Christians are instructed in the bible to submit to civil authority in every instance *except* the single instance in which civil authority forbids the following of a command of God. In such a case, the Christian is supposed to follow the command of God anyway – not rebel!

So, the bible gives Christians *no* justification for rebellion, and only *one* justification for disregarding the law.

As most Americans know, the American Revolution was largely a rebellion against *taxation without representation*. In other words, it was about money as much as freedom.

The bible did not justify *loyalty* to either side. There was no need for an early colonial Christian to feel *loyal* to England. The bible only demands obedience to laws, not loyalty to the government enforcing them.

Catholics: What would you say to a Protestant to convince them to become a Catholic?

If you have/do try to convince Protestants to become Catholic what is do you say to them? What would convince Protestants to leave Protestantism all behind and become Catholic? What advantages in your Christian lives as a Catholic do you see over Protestant Christians?

I don’t know if there is any one thing a Catholic can say to turn a Protestant to God’s Church. Conversion is an act of the Holy Spirit. In that light, we Catholics must remember to above all things love them. They are our brethren in Christ. We must love them and pray for them. Our Spirit-guided example and the love of Christ channeled through us is what wins hearts.

Loving them also means instruction. If a Protestant asks about the Catholic faith, be prepared to answer them with kindness and gentleness in your heart.

Love them and pray for them.

To Larry: Your comments about the Catholic bible are incorrect; study your biblical history. Also, celibacy is a grace from God. If you don’t agree with this and think that Protestants are correct in their beliefs, then why are you Catholic? It sounds like you need to pray and spend some time adoring the Blessed Eucharist.

God bless.

How do I remove a folder icon on my desktop on Window’s vista?

I made a shortcut on my desktop and now I don’t want it there anymore. I tried to just click and drag it to the recycle bin, but then a prompt came up asking me if I wanted to delete the folder. I don’t want to delete the folder, just get rid of the icon on my desktop. So how do I do that?

for the two points as it has already been said by Jason B

if the folder is just a shortcut you can delete the shortcut off of the desktop without losing the folder. the folder is in another location and that icon on your desktop is only a quick link to that location. by deleting it you will only be deleting that link and not the folder itself.

What are the earliest written examples of the bible?

Emperor Constantine is credited with compiling the first bible some 1700 years ago.
As I understand it, the Bible is compiled from a large collection of writings available at the time, these "reports" of events were written years after the event, they could even be written by people who never witnessed the events.
The Bible as it stands, could be completely different if some parts or reports had been left out,and others available at the time included in their place.

What I am trying to find out is,
what are the earliest actual written examples of the bible or the scriptures in existence.-something that could be scientifically tested,

1700 years ago might be accurate, It may be difficult to date accurately as ‘the bible’ is made up odf many parts. I recall constantine and a comitee put together the new testement, however don’t forget there were 273 is gosples to choose from. He chose 4 (and the catholic bible has additional books in it.) The old testement, many theorys are around. One of which is that it is a collection of 4 main contributors J D E P, I think J is for judges P for Priests but I cant remember the other two. This is only a theory though, hope this helps a little and mabee someone more knowlegable can expant or correct my inacuracies

How should a letter be addressed to a Brother of a Catholic institution?

I need to write a letter of recommendation for a friend, who is applying for a teaching position at a Catholic boys school. Being Protestant, I am not familiar as to how letters of correspondence should be addressed under these circumstances. Thank you!

Windowphobe is close to being right.

Yes you would address an envelope Brother James Jones, OSB. You could abbreviate Brother as Br.

In your letter however you would say Dear Br. James,

Religious brothers and sisters only use their last name when they are using their full name as in an address on an envelope.

You address a sister or brother with their title and their first name. The reasoning behind this is that we are not tied to a family but are brother and sister to all. Our community is our family.

If a Christian dies in the middle of sinning will they go to hell?

Also does this correlate with the phrase "be ready at all times"? How about this scenario a Christian man drives on the road and he has a lustful thought and then has a car wreck and dies.

Also, how does this correlate when if a Christian falls and gets back up spiritually. What happens if they don’t get back up spiritually and has a weak relationship with God?

We will never be fully ready if we keep our eyes on ourselves. As long as we live we will sin. It is our nature but as soon as a thought arises such as this then we are to go directly to Him and repent which means to walk away rather than be obsessed by that thought. God is not deceived. He knows our heart and what really lies underneath. Those thoughts that you are referring to are always there in our subconscious mind. They will raise up at the most inconvenient times like driving or reading or even praying. It is the wiles of the enemy that brings those things to the surface. There is a battle field that goes on in the mind and Jesus is our Champion if we let Him. You don’t have to walk in condemnation if you don’t allow the sin to grab a hold of you and over take you in a fault. Our conscience can be cleared if we don’t dwell in sin.
Now for the one who does not get up and repent then God will judge them according to their works. Salvation is free but, rewards are earned.
God Bless. :)

Edit: Sorry Kerawr every Christian can live by the ten commandments if we follow the first two. :)

What is the hardest story of the bible for you to believe in?

I would like to here from christians and atheists both as long as you have actually spent a decent amount of time reading/studying the bible.

I am Christian, and the most difficult thing for me to accept is that yes, there will be people who deny Christ and will be sent to hell. I fully believe it, can even understand it, but I do not want to accept it.

That is why souls are so important. It is better to take the offense from unbelivers and atheists than to attack back and miss a moment to plant, water, nurture a seed of salvation.

What are some differences between Catholic and Protestant?

I was raised Catholic, and recently I’ve begun to question my faith. Some of my Protestant friends have been asking me if Catholics are even Christians. I know they are, but it annoys me when they talk about things they know nothing about.

I know about the whole "Sola Fide" and "faith through works". I also know that Protestants originated from Catholics. But can someone elaborate on the main differences between Catholics and Protestants? Which do you think is correct.

Thanks!

If you want to know what the differences between a Catholic and a Protestant are, there are many but your best bet to understand is to sit down, get ready to read a lot, and go to authoritative and unbiased sources.

The big difference between Catholicism and Protestantism are the five pillars, which paint a different picture of salvation, definitions of sin, freewill or predestination. These differences are many and vary from church to church.

Catholicism would have the claim to be the oldest, most faithful representation of Christianity based on comparison between the Church today and the Bible. Also comparison between the Church today and the teachings of Christians in days gone (a democracy of the dead if you will) such as those writings of The Church Fathers.

Catholics believe in seven sacraments.
Protestants believe in two.

Catholics believe that the Eucharist is changed in essence into The Body and Blood of Jesus Christ (see John 6, and The Last Supper)
Protestants believe this was only a symbol.

Catholics believe Sacred Tradition and Sacred Scripture are equal in value in sharing The Word of God. (The Bible says as much and there are many Christian teachings not in The Bible, such as The Trinity)
Protestants believe that only that which is "plainly" laid out in The Bible is too be believed.

Catholics believe that we are justified by "faith together with works". We must have faith, but we will also be judged according to our works.
Protestants believe in the man made doctrine "Sola fide" or "Faith Alone" which says that we only need to believe and we are saved.

Other points of contention include;

- Clerical celibacy
- Church authority and hierarchy.
- Biblical canon
- the priesthood (automatic or consecrated)
